Virginia Chapter

Our mission is to provide advocacy, education, research, and direct financial relief to firefighters and their family’s affected by cancer. The Virginia Chapter of the Fire Fighter Cancer Foundation was established in memory of Johnny Thomas, a Prince William County firefighter, who lost his battle with cancer. While he was unable to defeat this awful disease, his memory lives on and we continue to provide hope to those in need.

Robert Moreau is a Captain with the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue and has been with the department for ten years. He also serves as the Virginia Director for the Fire Fighter Cancer Foundation (FFCF). He took over this role in early 2014 while undergoing treatments for Stage 3 Papillary Thyroid Cancer. At the time of his diagnosis, Robert was 25 years old and cancer was not on his agenda. His diagnosis came with many questions and even more unknowns. The FFCF provided the assistance and education Robert needed to make changes for himself, his department, and those around him. As any non-profit organization knows, starting from the ground up is difficult. Robert reached out to a foundation that was established in memory of a Prince William County Firefighter who fought a courageous battle with cancer. The Johnny Thomas Foundation has worked for years to make change in Prince William County and provided direct assistance to Robert in his time of need. Today, the two foundations have merged and focus their efforts in a collective push to reduce carcinogen exposure, educate firefighters, leadership and legislators, support research initiatives, and improve the quality of life for those battling cancer. Robert continues his own personal battle with cancer and began his second round of treatments in early 2017.

"We never lose a battle to cancer. We live every day to fight the fear and show cancer that no mater our beliefs, no matter our nationality, no matter our age it cannot end our love for one another. Our friendships remain, our souls are forever changed, and we will never lose the spirit and courage in our fight."                    -Robert Moreau

Danny Beck is a 14 year veteran and Lieutenant with the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue. Danny also serves as the Vice President of the Johnny Thomas Foundation, Inc, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to individuals battling cancer as well as support for their families. The Johnny Thomas Foundation was a dream of Danny’s wife, Mickey, and together, with family, that dream became reality. Recently the Johnny Thomas Foundation has merged with the Firefighter Cancer Foundation to become their Virginia Chapter. This merger allows both organizations to combine efforts and provide unmatched support to those struggling with this awful disease.  In the fire service, Danny believes that prevention and education starts with the Company Officer. A tone should be set early in people’s career to keep gear, apparatus and equipment clean so that we can all enjoy a long and healthy retirement. Take pride in your unit, crew, and take care of each other.
